For youth grades 7 – 9, we offer two different options for media production. Wednesdays will have an environmental focus while Thursdays focus more on media communication and technology. Youth may choose either of these days. The Wednesday “SCI” (Science, Community, Identity) program focuses on the connection between environment and media. We will explore environmental science through the creative lenses of technology and media by doing hands-on science based activities and using what we learn to inspire our media projects. The Guadalupe River, and its surrounding area, will serve as an outdoor learning lab where we will experiment with GPS and digital mapmaking, conduct water quality testing, and observe the natural environment through photography. We will also work in the museum’s garden and help with conservation efforts around the river and Museum.
On Saturdays, Discovery Youth volunteers in the Museum facilitating arts, crafts, and science activities with Museum visitors. We also assist with Museum special events such as the Bay Area Science Festival and Lunar New Year.
